The Oscars red carpet has begun, with red carpet host Vanessa Hudgens revealing that she's expecting her first baby with husband Cole Tucker. She and co-host Julianne Hough were at ease as interviewers, already knowing many of the attendees through their work in Hollywood.

Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel welcomed everyone to the 96th Oscars. Although the show started an hour earlier than in other years, he joked that it will still end late. He pointed out that 48 years ago Jodie Foster and Robert De Niro were nominated for Oscars and amazingly, this year, both are nominated again.

The first Oscar to be given out was for Best Actress in a Supporting role, given out by five former winners, each of whom honored one of the nominees. The trophy went to Da’Vine Joy Randolph for her work in The Holdovers. 

To give out the award for Costume Design, Jimmy Kimmel called on John Cena to recreate what he called the craziest moment in the history of the Academy Awards, when a man streaked across the stage behind presenter David Niven 50 years ago in 1974. John pretended to have lost his nerve, but then walked out naked holding the nominees card in front of his private parts. The Oscar went to Poor Things, which also had just won the award for Production Design.

A performance by Osage tribe members to honor the film Killers of the Flower Moon received a standing ovation -- a highlight of the evening. Soon after, the award for Best International Film went to the British film The Zone of Interest, which features a Nazi family that lives next door to Auschwitz during WWII.

Robert Downey Jr. received a standing ovation for Actor in a Supporting Role for Oppenheimer, with John Krasinski, who was sitting directly behind him, being one of the first to get to his feet. Next to John was a seat filler in place of his wife, nominee Emily Blunt, who may have still been backstage after appearing with fellow nominee and The Fall Guy co-star Ryan Gosling to honor stunt people. After the commercial break, Emily was back in her seat as the audience gave a standing ovation to presenters Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito, who co-starred in the 1988 movie Twins.

Speaking of Ryan Gosling, he gave a show-stopping performance of "I'm Just Ken" from the movie Barbie that included many of his co-stars -- and received a standing ovation. However, it was another song from Barbie that won -- "What Was I Made For," which was performed and written by Billie Eilish and her brother, Finneas O'Connell.

Just prior to the Best Picture being awarded, Jimmy Kimmel read out loud an early review of his performance as an Oscar host written by Donald Trump on his social media platform. It began: "Has there EVER been a WORSE HOST than Jimmy Kimmel at The Oscars. His opening was that of a less than average person trying too hard to be something which he is not, and never can be. Get rid of Kimmel and perhaps replace him with another washed up, but cheap, ABC ‘talent,’ George Slopanopoulos." Jimmy thanked him, adding, "Isn't it past your jail time?"
