Wrath of Man starring Jason Statham posterAs more and more theaters begin to reopen, movie lovers are able to enjoy brand new films every week. This weekend's only new wide release, the action-thriller Wrath of Man from director Guy Ritchie and starring Jason Statham, debuted at the top of the box office. Opening in 2,875 locations and also available in IMAX, the film took in a solid $8.1 million.

After claiming first place last weekend, Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train slipped to second place. The highest-grossing anime film of all time finished with another $3 million, bringing its domestic total to $39.6 million.

Mortal Kombat, which has been battling Demon Slayer since both films opened three weekends ago, was defeated again and settled for third place. The live-action adaptation of the popular video game franchise also fell one spot from last weekend, earning $2.4 million for a three-week total of $37.8 million.

Godzilla vs. Kong dropped a spot to fourth place, taking in an additional $1.9 million for a six-week total of $93 million. The monster mashup is the first film to close in on the coveted $100 million mark since the COVID-19 pandemic forced North America into lockdown in March 2020.

With a weekend that was heavy in action pictures, Walt Disney’s animated film Raya and the Last Dragon hung onto fifth place for the third weekend in a row. The only film in the top five meant for family audiences, it earned an additional $1.9 million for a 10-week total of $43.8 million. ~Alexandra Heilbron
